Everyday there are more than 100,000 GP appointments regarding musculoskeletal pain such as knee pain! In fact every year about 21% of the U.K. population will visit the GP about musculoskeletal problems each year.
A common cause if knee pain is a clinical syndrome called Osteoarthritis of the knee And over 4.11 million people in England have osteoarthritis of the knee with Just over half of all people consulting a GP about osteoarthritis have knee osteoarthritis and a shocking 2.36 million of these are working age people!
The figure of sufferers is set to rise to over 6.5 million in the next 5 years!
So what is going on? Why are so many people suffering with knee main?
Well we are living longer for one so maybe we could forgive our knees for aching after carrying us around for the last 80-90 years but what about the 20 year olds or even those in their 40’s or 50’s with plenty left to give being immobilised by knee pain?
At FitER knee pain is a comment complaint of many of our nutritional clients, some diagnosed with oesteoarthritis others have got ‘wear and tear’. Most of our clients also have a daily prescription of anti-inflammatory pain killers like naproxen, ibuprofen or aspirin. Most have suffered for years.
Whilst we are not going to cure the disease at FitER I am very happy to say that for many of our clients (and consequently their husbands) the pain and symptoms have been reduced or eliminated.
There are some key contributors to knee pain the first and foremost is inactivity! Consequential to this is then weight gain, this means that the knees are under increased pressure. Not only that but the muscles that support the joint are weakens and this knee pain prevails.
The estimated direct cost of physical inactivity to the NHS across the UK is £1.06 billion per year with NHS costs associated with overweight and obesity each year are £5.1 billion. This is a huge figure. Not all knee pain related of course but an insane amount especially when we as individuals could reduce this burden somewhat by being moe active! Add to this cost the 2.8+ million days of list work due to musculoskeletal problems.
You need to be active it’s as simple as that! Start gentle, start supported but just start. At FitER we work very closely with a locally owned gym called Energie Fitness for Women in Plympton, they operate motor assisted exercises along with their gym and fitness classes to facilitate exercise for people who really really need it, those who’s knee pain, hip problems or even obesity related lack of mobility so whatever is stopping you there are places out there to help.
The next factor to look at is good! Your body needs to be nourished, when you eat foods that the body is not designed to deal with like processed foods, chemical additives and preservatives, sugar substitutes and excess fats, combined with s general lack in bioavailable vitamins and minerals it’s no wonder the body responds negatively! For some this might be the trigger for fat gain and the cycle of inactivity and more weight gain but for many the response is inflammatory.
The body becomes inflamed and pain can ensue. Filling the diet with nutrients, removing anti- nutrients and adding in anti inflammatory foods like ginger will seriously help.
So if you suffer knee pain take a look at your lifestyle and assess the simple things you can do to reduce your pain without the need for strong medication and before it is to late and joint replacements are required.
National guidelines for physical activity advise that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity each week. Yet most don’t! In 2012 67% of men and 57% of women were either overweight or obese. Obese people are more than twice as likely to develop knee osteoarthritis than those of normal body weight so make sure you start making changes today!
